With the specialized search engine implementations for the meta data, the numeric data and the textual contents, finding data has become easier.

If you have the data you need, what do you want to do with the data?

I appreciate your inputs if you can send your feedback below.

Free mobile service gives financial analysts easy access to SEC financial reports of 10,000 U.S. Listed companies.

Enabled by the new generation of financial reporting standard (XBRL Language and US-GAAP Taxonomy), Prime Aim delivers every statement and disclosure in financial reports to mobile devices, unaltered and sooner than ever.

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, August 18, 2014 – Prime Aim Technology today announced that, through its Web site (, financial analysts can now review the latest financial reports from about 10,000 U.S. Listed companies with their mobile devices for free.

None of the major finance portals or mobile apps gives financial analysts easy access to these financial reports through mobile devices. Prime Aim fills the gap and goes beyond.

Besides the three basic statements (Balance Sheet, Income Statement and Cash Flow Statement), a financial report on average has 44 statements and disclosures. Through Prime Aim’s Web site, financial analysts can review each statement or disclosure from their mobile devices.

The financial reports covered are those quarterly (10-Q) and annual (10-K) reports from all U.S. Listed companies.

Thanks to the SEC mandate on the interactive financial reporting (in XBRL), financial reports can now be sliced and diced to fit into small mobile screens. Through automation, Prime Aim brings these reports to financial analysts shortly after they are accepted by the SEC.

Whether you are on a commuting train, in a meeting room or in a hotel, you can now review the latest financial statements with your Android phone, iPhone, iPad or other mobile devices.

Prime Aim’s founder to participate in the panel discussion at the 2014 XBRL U.S. National Conference – Data Forum

Pittsburgh, PA, 08/16/2014, Prime Aim:

Qinlin Luo, Prime Aim’s founder, will join 4 other XBRL thought leaders and technologists in the panel “Performing Analysis with XBRL”, one of several panels at the 2014 XBRL U.S. National Conference – Data Forum. Please stop by to see 4 brief demos and participate in the follow-up discussions on new forms of analysis and visualization made possible with XBRL.

This is Mr. Luo’s 3rd participation in the Data Forum. In 2013, he talked about how data mining with XBRL data is superior to the old fashioned document search. In 2012, he talked about the extraordinary characteristics of XBRL data – things to pay attention to when you process, analyze and present XBRL data.

In this year’s conference, Mr. Luo will showcase how financial analysts can interact with XBRL data through instant analytics and visualization. Such analytics and visualization could also provide accountants, XBRL filing agents and regulators insight on how US-GAAP taxonomies have been applied to the 78 million data points and 7 million disclosures and footnotes in the last 6 years.

Please contact Mr. Luo if you are interested in meeting with him before, during or after the conference:

Here is the details about the conference, the data forum and the session:

Challenges on rendering XBRL data on mobile devices

Rendering financial data on mobile devices is difficult due to the small screen size and the dimensional nature of the financial data. Rendering XBRL data from public companies has a few additional challenges.

1. The concept name is long and it has no space between words. Without space, the rendering engine is not able to break the concept name into more than one lines.

Example: AvailableForSaleSecuritiesAndHeldToMaturitySecurities

2. The label isn’t always accurate and isn’t sufficient without the concept name.

Example: The label for the concept “IntangibleAssetsNetExcludingGoodwill” could just be “Total”, which only makes sense when the concept name is also displayed.

You might think the concept name is more accurate than the label. This is not true.

Concept: us-gaap:CommercialPaper

Label: Commercial paper (includes $0 and $6,045 for VIEs) (a)

So it is the best to display both the concept name and the label.

3. Rendering dimensions or hypercubes (similar to the pivot table in Excel) is the ultimate challenge.

a). Each dimension has its own combination of the concept names and labels, both could be too long for the small screen.

b). The hierarchy (or the drill down) is hard to render with the small screen.

c). 3 to 5 dimensions are not rare. If you consider the legal entities and context period as dimensions, the rendering is even harder.

d). Some numbers are big – too big to fit into a table.

4. There is very little you can do with the textblock in the format of HTML/XHTML. You can create styles to fit your content into the small screen. Unfortunately, these styles could be nullified by the styles embedded in the HTML/XHTML codes in the textblock. These textblocks are optimized for the regular desktop browsers, not for the mobile browsers.

I hope the iXBRL experts will take rendering in the mobile devices into account when/if iXBRL is mandated.

If you have creative ideas, please let me know. I am trying to make more user friendly in the mobile browsers.

The need for the UGT TECHNICAL Implementation Guide and key conformance rules

Why do companies or filing agents make rookie mistakes – mistakes that can be avoided with more experiences, time and money, such as decimals, negative sign and even the company’s fiscal year and fiscal period?

Why do different  companies or filing agents treat things so differently while they are virtually the same? For example, what the link role for the Balance Sheet should be; whether the Assets should be present; etc..

I think the big reason is the lack of the UGT TECHNICAL Implementation Guide – the step-by-step manual to create XBRL documents.

The current implementation guide is more like a user guide – how to use or apply the U.S. GAAP Taxonomy (UGT). This TECHNICAL Implementation Guide is about how to create XBRL documents. It should have details about:

1. how to create XBRL documents with each standard concept (i.e. Assets).

1.1 with examples that can be simply copied and pasted to each document (.xsd, .ins, .lab), then change the numbers in the instance document.

1.2 with embedded comments on what to watch out for errors, such as how to avoid common mistakes like decimals and negative signs.

1.3 with the conformance rules such as (for the purpose of illustration): conf-UGT-2014-12345 – Assets can not be a negative number and it can not be null.

1.4 with the notes such as “This is how to find the right taxonomy concept…if you can not find a right one, this is the way to create an extension…”.

2. similarly, how to create XBRL documents with each standard link role (i.e. ConsolidatedBalanceSheetsUnaudited) and each hypercube or table.

2.1 with examples that can be simply copied and pasted to each document (.xsd, .ins, .lab, .def, .cal, .pre) with minor adjustments.

2.2 with embedded comments on what to watch out for errors, such as how to make sure the summation-item calculation adds up.

2.3 with the conformance rules such as:

2.31 conf-UGT-2014-456789 – Assets must be present if your SIC CODE is xxxx;

2.32 conf-UGT-2014-333679 – ConsolidatedBalanceSheetsUnaudited must be present if your SIC CODE is xxxx.

2.4 with the notes such as “This is how to find the right standard link role…if you can not find a right one, this is the way to create a new role…”.

In short, this TECHNICAL guide is what a software vendor and filing agent need most. They should be able to do up to 80% or more of the work by simply copying and pasting contents in this document. The filing documents will be automatically with higher standard and be more consistent in many ways.

Many, if not most, rookie errors can be avoided with this TECHNICAL Implementation Guide.

It is not too late to create this document. Many companies are still not getting the balance sheet right, not even mention the disclosures such as pension tables.

Certainly not too late if iXBRL will be the next standard.

To exempt smaller companies from XBRL filings? Or to assist them with grants or tax credits?

Congressman Mr. Robert Hurt (R-VA) introduced a new bill H.R. 4164 on 03/06/2014 called: H.R.4164 – Small Company Disclosure Simplification Act.

This bill is “To exempt smaller public companies from requirements relating to the use of Extensible Business Reporting Language for periodic reporting to the Securities and Exchange Commission, and for other purposes.”

The detail is here:

Mr. Robert Hurt has pushed in this direction before:

In my opinion, this bill is against the trend of making data machine-readable in many industries.

Healthcare industry has a number of data standards to digitize patient records, facilitate electronic exchange and measure quality of care. Even the pipeline industry has its own data standard called PODS (Pipeline Open Data Standard).

There are benefits to have open data standards like XBRL to digitize financial reports from the smaller companies. If it is not obvious now, the benefits will be seen in the future. To exempt them from XBRL requirements is to move backward.

But there is true significant cost (time and money) for the smaller companies to digitize financial statements. What can be done to help them?

Let’s look at the healthcare industry. The cost burden in adopting data standard is not unique in the financial industry.

Smaller hospitals, clinics and professionals have no technical knowledge, time and money to digitize patient information. They have much bigger and much more complex data standards than XBRL to deal with.

So what makes these hospitals, clinics and professionals adopt data standards?

One, there are federal mandates and phased-in implementation guidelines. This is the same with XBRL. The SEC has been doing this since 2009 when the mandate started for big companies and the timelines were set for smaller companies.

Second, there are assistance and incentives from the federal, state and local agencies, in the form of grants and tax credits. For example, CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) has the EHR Incentive Programs:

“Eligible professionals can receive up to $44,000 through the Medicare EHR Incentive Program and up to $63,750 through the Medicaid EHR Incentive Program.”

Congressman Mr. Robert Hurt wants to help the smaller companies on their XBRL filings. A different kind of bill – with the financial assistance in the form of grants or tax credits – will do better than this bill, for now and for the long term.

Another year has passed. How much XBRL data is available now?

Another year has passed. How much XBRL data is available now to financial analysts?

Here is a snapshot of the data copied from a page that tracks the last 5 incremental changes of XBRL data coming in and traveling through our systems.
